Publicity – “An act or device designed to attract public interest; specifically: information with news value issued as a means of gaining public attention or support. Also: The dissemination of information or promotional material.”
The way you present the music, like the press kit, must be well thought out. Do not send out copies of your CD via snail mail – instead, send a link from strategic sites with professional artwork and proper tagging so the writers can access your tracks easily. Its not always what you send out but how you send it out.
Your gift should be heard around the world. The only way for people to hear about you and what you are doing in your career is for you to tell them. We will help you tell the world.
Everything must be well thought out. Engaging the right team is what we do.
We believe in training...We believe that experience builds an artist...We believe in Artist development. There was a concept in the record business for years called artist development.
The idea was actually pretty simple. The label would sign an artist that they loved or whose future they believed in. Typically those artists were at the beginning of their creative potential but still had not totally dialed in their thing.
In those glory days, the artist development process could be analogous to a budding romance. First, you went on a date and held hands. Then perhaps on your second date, you kissed. And if you were getting along great, you build up to that moment of consummation – the record contract.
In today's music business, there are no such luxuries, no candles, no wine, no romantic dinners, just a simple yes or no. It's not about love. It's about results.
Keith W. Reid is a Music Manager, Music Management Consultant, Artist Development Guru, Industry Speaker, Brand and Marketing Specialist
(Bio).
Reid once heard Berry Gordy (founder of Motown) say that “no body creates, builds or experiences success alone”. Marvin Gaye told him that “It is impossible to discover someone that has already existed, before you met them”. One thing is for certain It takes a team leader with many people acting in concert to achieve success. Keith believes that helping an Artist discover who they are, and where their gift will take them is the ultimate rush. When asked, what is the tried and true method for making a star? He will tell you that Artist Development coupled with experience is invaluable to launching an icon. These are lessons well learned while being raised in the Motown system.
K.W. Reid has dedicated his entire life to music. He hails from a musical family, rooted in the tradition of Motown as it was unfolding. If you ask him, he will tell you from the earliest time he could remember, music was his calling. He has held just about every position from singer/performer to industry management executive. Although most of his expertise in in Pop, R&B and Gospel. He loves all music and especially the fusion of genres.
While in college at Ohio State, Keith cut his teeth in the event and party planning business, while hold/hosting parties on campus for performing artist, like Prince, The Jacksons, The Rolling Stones, Toni Braxton, fraternity talent shows etc. Keith Learned the radio business during the summer breaks while working for Urban Radio (WGCI) during the breaks from school. Keith will tell you that he was fortunate to land a job with IBM after college, because at the time, the IBM PC was just becoming popular and he was part of task force, that would study how to bring musical content to the desktop PC and something that was called at the time, handheld intelligent devices (now called smart phones). There is no way he could know this at the time, but those experiences would lay the ground work for what he calls, “a career of a lifetime”.
A chance meeting on an airplane flying first class (he only had a coach ticket – it’s a complicated story), he happens to have sat next to an executive with the Sony Corporation. Unbeknown to Keith, Sony was in the process of buying CBS, at that time. CBS had the soon to be crowned, the King of Pop Michael Jackson on their roster. After sharing his music experience (Motown and IBM “Music”) with Ryoji Chubachi, within a month Keith was offered an opportunity to come to work with Sony.
K.W. Reid's tenure with Sony was for 17 years…he says “it was a blast”. He held executive positions at Sony Music, Sony BMG and EPIC. Keith was involved in the projects/careers of, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, George Michael, Prince, Backstreet Boys, R. Kelly and many more.
In 2001, Keith was asked to work on a new TV show called American Idol, after a year of casting for the show, it aired on Fox on June, 11, 2002. That show went on to create superstars like Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Jacob Lusk, Jessica Sanchez, Stephany Negrete, Blair Perkins etc. Again, the lesson was reinforced “it takes a village to raise a star”. Team work and that platform made icons.
With his ear to the ground, Keith had begun to understand that a change in the music industry was taking hold. Long standing healthy profits were shrinking and resources were diminishing. But singing reality show was the rave. Mr. Reid saw the opportunity to strike out on his own and build an Artist Development and Management Company (Connect the Dots Entertainment) alongside a PR Agency (Image of Success International), while giving back through The Preservation of the Entertainment Arts Foundation (focused on giving the truly gifted a chance to share their blessing with the world) .
Through those organizations, we began to participate in the casting of American Idol, X-Factor, BET’s 106 and Park, The Voice and The Four. Keith also worked with artist, Stevie Wonder, Tori Kelly, Julia and Jaden Michaels while at the Hollywood Pop Academy.
Mr. Reid sets on the board of the Preservation of the Arts Foundation, Regional Grammy Club, RIAA Music Managers and The Black Sports Agents Association,
In 2017, Reid began a joint venture with Qadree El-Amin, El-Amin has worked closely and formed valuable alliances with a veritable who’s who of music’s elite, including noted record label presidents Clive Davis, L.A. Reid, Jimmy Iovine and Tommy Mottola. While he is largely recognized for his success with Boyz II Men, the El-Amin stamp extends far beyond the popular 90’s boy band. He has also served as manager to global superstars Michael Jackson, Vanessa Williams, Janet Jackson, Teddy Riley & Blackstreet, Deborah Cox, The Braxton, Brownstone and Lou Bega, among many others.
